La Plata County

With increased scrutiny on election officials and election results following the 2020 election, La Plata County implemented VerifyNow in 2021 to independently tabulate their general election results and increase voter confidence. With two independent tabulations of their results, one by their primary voting system and a second Clear Ballot re-tabulation, the county was able to highlight the accuracy of their primary voting system and build trust with constituents.

“Conducting an independent tabulation with Clear Ballot helped me to be able to speak to my constituents and show them that our system works properly because we ran it through two totally different tabulation systems and the results are the same,” said Tiffany Lee, La Plata County’s Clerk and Recorder. “It reaffirms to the public that our results are accurate.”

La Plata County chose the Clear Ballot system because it was intuitive and offered insights into how voters marked their ballots beyond just filling in the oval. Using a EAC-certified voting system vendor allowed the county to conduct an independent audit without the time and risk of error from a hand count.

“The functionality of the Clear Ballot system is great and really intuitive,” said Erin Hutchins, Elections Administrator for La Plata County. “I love how it captures the whole contest area instead of just the oval. It’s fun to be able to see the trends in marks and the data and to dig into the reports. We look forward to using the system again.”
